There are many things you can do to impact your images. The subject impacts them, the lighting impacts them, the processing impacts them, and the composition impacts them. One composition trick you can use is to fill your frame. This means that you get in nice and close to your subject and “fill the frame” with it. Of course there are many different composition tricks a photographer can use regardless of whether you are using your smartphone (here are 7 tips for better smartphone pictures of your kids), a point and shoot camera (here are 5 tips for taking better pictures with your point and shoot) or a DSLR (check out what’s in my bag), or something else. For now, we are just going to talk about filling the frame.

- Filling the frame can eliminate distracting backgrounds and make otherwise unappealing settings work! There are times when I feel it’s necessary to show what’s going on in a particular setting so that it adds to the story of the image. there are other times when I find that the mess in my house, or my car (it’s disgusting i tell you– no, seriously, here are some of the many things I have found in my van….), or the garbage can at the playground to be completely unnecessary. Can you blame me?? Pay attention to what’s going on in your surroundings and consider filling the frame if you’re trying to get rid of an ugly background.
- Filling the frame can bring the focus to the details. Think about it, if you’re too far from those baby lips, you won’t be able to capture them clearly. Get up nice and close!! You definitely want to be able to capture the details of childhood!!!
- Filling the frame can help show emotion more clearly. Whether your subject is happy or sad, serious or silly it’s always easier to read when you’re nice and close.
